
We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 2000.
In 2000 the world witnesses the following: Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe, is released in theaters on May 5. Eight days later, the world’s tallest and fastest roller coaster to date The Millennium Force opens at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio on May 13. Less than a week later in Miller City, Ohio on May 19, 44 seniors receive their Miller City High School diplomas. X-Men premieres in U.S. theaters on July 14. From September 15 - October 1, the Summer Olympic Games are held in Sydney, Australia. The U.S. team claims the most gold medals (37) and most overall medals (93) during the competition. On October 12, while being refueled at shore in the Yemen’s Aden Harbor, the American naval vessel U.S.S. Cole falls victim to a suicide bomber attack. The Al-Qaeda terrorist action claims the lives of 17 American sailors and wounds 39 more. In baseball’s first Subway Series since the 1950s, the New York Yankees triumph over the crosstown New York Mets in five games to win the franchise’s 26th World Series title. On November 7, Republican George W. Bush defeats Democrat candidate Al Gore to win the presidential election, although the outcome would not become official for over a month due to disputed votes in the state of Florida. After 128 years of serving as an American retail icon, Montgomery Ward announces on December 28 that it will be going out of business.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1999.
In 1999 the world witnesses the following: On February 12, in the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, the Senate votes to acquit the second-term President. Starring Keanu Reeves, the science-fiction action movie The Matrix makes its debut in theaters on March 31. On May 19, the Star Wars franchise makes its long-awaited return to the silver screen with Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Two days later, 39 seniors receive their Miller City High School diplomas on May 21. In a thrilling World Cup final on July 10 at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, the U.S. Women’s National Team defeats China in penalty kicks as Brandi Chastain knocks home the game winner. Six days later, John F. Kennedy, Jr. is piloting his private plane off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard when it crashes, tragically killing him as well as his wife and sister-in-law. ABC premieres the U.S. version of game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? on August 16 as part of a two-week daily event hosted by Regis Philbin. U.S. golfer Justin Leonard’s dramatic 45-foot putt on the 17th hole caps the Americans’ miraculous comeback over the European team at the Ryder Cup in Brookline, Massachusetts on September 26. In Motown the next day, the Detroit Tigers play their final game at venerable 87 year-old Tiger Stadium. Toy Story 2, the sequel to the wildly successful Toy Story, debuts in theaters on November 24.

In 1998 the world witnesses the following: At Daytona International Speedway on February 15, NASCAR driver and legend Dale Earnhardt finally wins the Daytona 500. Disney’s newest theme park, Animal Kingdom, opens its doors to the public on April 22. On May 22, Miller City High School graduates 44 seniors. In Game 6 of the NBA Finals on June 14 against the Utah Jazz, Michael Jordan makes the game and series-winning shot in what would be his last game as a Chicago Bull. This Bulls’ championship is their sixth in eight seasons. Steven Spielberg’s World War II film Saving Private Ryan premieres in movie theaters. On August 7, the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Egypt are simultaneously bombed, killing 224 people and injuring 4,500 more. The attacks are eventually linked to terrorist Osama Bin Laden. Google, Inc. is founded in California on September 4 by Stanford graduate students Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Roger Maris’s 37-year old single-season home run record of 61 is broken when St. Louis Cardinal first baseman Mark McGwire swats his 62nd dinger on September 8. On December 19, the U.S. House of Representatives forwards articles of impeachment against President Clinton to the Senate. The most popular children’s toy at Christmas is the Furby.

In 1997 the world witnesses the following: 21-year old golf phenom Tiger Woods wins The Masters in April by a record-setting 12 strokes to claim his first green jacket. In Miller City, Ohio on May 23, 40 seniors receive their high school diplomas. In June, the Detroit Red Wings sweep the Philadelphia Flyers to win hockey’s Stanley Cup for the first time in 42 years. On July 2, the sci-fi movie Men in Black is released in theaters. Shortly after midnight on August 31 in Paris, the Princess of Wales, Diana is rushed to a nearby hospital after a car accident. She would pass away from her injuries just four hours later. Her funeral at Westminster Abbey a week later is broadcast worldwide with an estimated 2 billion people tuning in to watch. On October 26, the Florida Marlins defeat the Cleveland Indians in extra innings of a thrilling Game 7 denying the Indians and their fans an end to the franchise’s 49-year championship drought. On December 18 in Chicago, famous comedian and Saturday Night Live actor Chris Farley is found dead from a drug overdose in his apartment. James Cameron’s Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, premieres in the United States the following day.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1996.
In 1996 the world witnesses the following: On April 3 in Montana, suspected Unabomber Ted Kaczynski is arrested by FBI officers. 39 seniors graduate from Miller City High School on May 24. On July 3, science-fiction blockbuster Independence Day starring Will Smith is released in American movie theaters. Also in July, toy company Tyco releases plush toy Tickle-Me-Elmo. Atlanta serves as the host for the 1996 Summer Olympics which begin on July 19. Eight days later a bombing occurs in Atlanta’s Centennial Park during an evening event, killing 2 and injuring 111. The efforts of security officer Richard Jewell to remove people from the area prevents further casualties. On August 1, U.S. sprinter Michael Johnson wins the gold medal in the 200 meter dash with a world-record time of 19.32 seconds. The Nintendo 64 game console is released in the U.S. on September 29. In the November U.S. presidential election, incumbent President Bill Clinton wins a landslide victory over Republican challenger Bob Dole. Space Jam makes its debut in theaters on November 15.

On April 10 & 11, 22 Miller City High School students took part in the 18th Annual HOSA State Leadership Conference at the Glass City Center in Toledo. Participants engaged in networking opportunities, learning workshops and competitive events in multiple medical-related categories. Nearly all the attending schools with HOSA chapters are large urban and suburban school districts or career-technical centers. Despite the school size disparity, our Miller City HOSA students showed up and showed out. Five of our competitors were recognized for their outstanding performance in several competitive events: Ashten Searfoss - Clinical Laboratory Science (10th Place); Karyssa Long - Nursing Assisting (5th Place); Raegan Schiffer - Pharmacy Science (3rd Place); Miriam Ellerbrock - Pharmacy Science (1st Place); Anna Niese - Family Medicine Test (1st Place). Congratulations to these students and our Biomedical staff/HOSA Advisor leaders Mrs. Croft, Mr. Kaufman and Mrs. Klear for their remarkable work!







We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1995.
In 1995 the world witnesses the following: 168 people are killed as part of a domestic terror bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19 in Oklahoma City. Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, the medieval epic about the life of Scottish legend William Wallace, premieres in U.S. theaters. On June 2, Miller City High School graduates 46 seniors. On September 2, the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame opens in Cleveland, Ohio. In a Los Angeles courtroom on October 3, the highly publicized O.J. Simpson trial comes to a dramatic conclusion as the jury finds Simpson not guilty of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. The Cleveland Indians defeat the Seattle Mariners in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series on October 17 to earn their first trip to the World Series in 41 years. The Indians would go on to lose to the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. The city of Cleveland experienced an even tougher loss a week later as Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell announces that he will be moving the legendary franchise to Baltimore at the end of the 1995 season. The first-ever feature-length computer-animated film Toy Story is released in theaters on November 22.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1994.
In 1994 the world witnesses the following: On May 27, 46 Miller City seniors receive their high school diplomas. Disney’s animated motion picture The Lion King is released in U.S. theaters on June 15. June 17 marks the beginning of soccer’s World Cup, held in multiple venues in the United States. That same night, Americans are transfixed as they watch live coverage of a police chase involving NFL Hall of Famer and actor O.J. Simpson. Days earlier, Simpson had been charged with the double murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Nicole’s friend Ronald Goldman. The hours-long chase finally ends in the driveway of Simpson’s Brentwood, California home as he peacefully surrenders to police. Entrepreneur Jeff Bezos founds Amazon on July 5. The following day, Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks is released in movie theaters across the country. On August 12, Major League Baseball players go on strike, leading to a 232-day work stoppage and a cancellation of the 1994 World Series. On NBC in September, the pilot episode of Friends airs.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1993.
In 1993 the world witnesses the following: In New York City on February 26, the World Trade Center is the victim of a terrorist attack as a van containing a bomb and parked below the North Tower explodes. The attack results in six deaths and injures 1,000 people. On April 19, near Waco, Texas, the Branch Davidian compound is consumed by fire as part of a 51-day standoff between the compound’s inhabitants and federal ATF agents. The fire kills 76 people including Davidian leader David Koresh. On May 28, Miller City High School graduates 34 seniors. Two weeks later, Steven Spielberg’s science-fiction movie Jurassic Park debuts in American theaters. In a shocking decision, Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan announces his retirement from basketball on October 6. On November 30, Spielberg’s powerful World War II epic on the Holocaust, Schindler’s List, makes its debut. The two iconic movies go on to gross a whopping $1.3 billion at the box office.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1992.
In 1992 the world witnesses the following: On May 22, Johnny Carson hosts his final episode of The Tonight Show ending a nearly 30-year run. Exactly one week later in Miller City, Ohio, 36 seniors receive their Miller City High School diplomas. The U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team, better known as “The Dream Team” takes the world by storm at the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Featuring legendary players such as Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan the team dominates all of its opponents, including the 117-85 victory over Croatia in the gold medal game. Category 5 Hurricane Andrew makes landfall in south Florida in late August, killing 65 people and causing an estimated $27.5 billion in damages. On Tuesday, November 3, Democratic nominee Bill Clinton defeats incumbent President George H.W. Bush to claim the presidency. The day before Thanksgiving, Walt Disney Pictures releases animated feature film, Aladdin.

In 1991 the world witnesses the following: Hewlett Packard releases the world’s first color scanner, the ScanJet IIC. On January 17, the United States begins its involvement in the Gulf War with Operation Desert Storm through airstrikes against Iraq. Nearly two weeks later, psychological thriller The Silence of the Lambs debuts in New York City theaters. In March, the U.S. Department of Justice announces that Exxon has agreed to to pay $1 billion for the clean-up of the 1989 Exxon Valdez Alaskan oil spill. The Miller City High School Class of 1991 graduates 44 seniors on May 31. In June, Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls defeat Magic Johnson’s Los Angeles Lakers in five games in the NBA Finals. The big summer movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day is released on July 3 in US theaters. On August 6, the first web page went live. On ABC network on September 17, comedian Tim Allen’s sitcom Home Improvement airs its first episode. On November 22, Disney Pictures releases Beauty and the Beast. On Christmas Day, Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev resigns and the Soviet Union dissolves thus ending the decades-long Cold War between the U.S. and USSR.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1990.
In 1990 the world witnesses the following: On February 11, Ohio native Buster Douglas shocks the boxing world by knocking out undefeated heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in a match in Tokyo, Japan. In late April, the Space Shuttle Discovery successfully places the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit. A few days later the longest-running musical in Broadway History A Chorus Line closes after over 6,000 performances. On May 25, 43 seniors from the Class of 1990 graduate from Miller City High School. In Faith, South Dakota on August 12 paleontologist Sue Hendrickson discovers a well-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex specimen and appropriately names it “Sue”. Thereafter, “Sue” goes on to be displayed at Chicago’s Field Museum. On October 20 the Cincinnati Reds defeat the Oakland A’s in Game 4 of the World Series, sweeping their way to the franchise’s 5th World Series title. Home Alone premieres in Chicago movie theaters on November 10 and instantly becomes a holiday favorite. In December, EA Sports releases the first version of Madden Football for the Sega Genesis.

We continue our 100 Days, 100 Classes journey with the Miller City High School graduating class of 1989.
In 1989 the world witnesses the following: On January 9, Sega releases the Genesis home video game console. On March 24, oil supertanker Exxon Valdez strikes a reef off the coast of Alaska, spilling 10.8 million gallons of oil into the waters of Prince William Sound. In Beijing, China’s Tiananmen Square thousands of young student protestors demonstrate against Communist rule in April. In Miller City, Ohio on May 26, 42 seniors from the Class of 1989 graduate. The NBA’s “Bad Boys”, the Detroit Pistons, sweep the Los Angeles Lakers in June to win the franchise’s first World championship. Earning a whopping $40 million in its first weekend at the box office, Batman starring Jack Nicholson as the Joker, sets an earnings record in late June. On July 5, NBC premieres the television sitcom Seinfeld. Nintendo’s hand-held video game console Game Boy is released in the United States on July 31. Just four minutes into ABC’s broadcast of Game 3 of the World Series at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park on October 17, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake strikes the Bay Area much to the shock of the viewing audience who is subsequently shown live aerial images of the quake’s impact. The earthquake is ultimately responsible for 63 deaths and an estimated $6 billion in damages. On November 9, Cold War symbol the Berlin Wall begins to be torn down, eliminating the physical barrier between communist East Berlin and free West Berlin. That evening, many East Berliners and West Berliners come together at the Wall to celebrate. In December, Fox Network premieres the animated comedy The Simpsons.
